Assessing Campus MOOCs

12/03/12 08:04 PM

Two new projects are examining the value of massive open online courses (MOOCs) in American institutions of higher learning.

One is a new agreement between Coursera and the American Council on Education (ACE) that will scrutinize whether MOOCs are viable as part of a traditional college curriculum.  And, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is giving the non-profit research group Ithaka S+R $1.4 million to conduct a study on the impact of MOOCs like Coursera and edX as an integrated instructional resource at public universities in Maryland.

Ithaka S+R will monitor, assess and document lessons learned from the implementations. “Rigorous assessment of how students fared using these technologies will hopefully help reassure those concerned about educational quality, while documentation of obstacles encountered and overcome will help those struggling with implementation,” says Debbie Robinson, a spokeswoman for the Gates Foundation.
