The popular communications company Skype is partnering with the non-profit DonorsChoose.org to provide thousands of teachers with the resources to use Skype in their classrooms. The company will donate $250,000 to U.S. public school teachers to help them acquire the resources to use Skype in their classrooms.
DonorsChoose.org is an online charity that allows donors to support schools. Each teacher who signs up for the Skype program will receive a Donors Choose gift card that can be used toward the purchase of laptops, netbooks and webcams.
Having Skype available in the classroom will enable educators to interact with teachers and classrooms all over the world. The company has already registered over 23,000 teachers.
Skype, a division of Microsoft, is doing this in support of Microsoft’s overall goal to educate kids today so they will be prepared for jobs requiring technological competence and fluency. Skype’s long term goal is to put its communication’s software into 1 million U.S. classrooms.
