The Defense Department to Expand its Use of Mobile Devices

The Defense Department is approving the broader use of smartphones and tablet computers for unclassified uses, including training, information sharing and development.

The Defense Information Systems Agency and the National Security Agency have partnered with industry to develop appropriate security guidelines for some of the most commonly used smartphones and tablets. They plan to continue with additional devices. The exact operating systems and companies involved in these efforts have not been disclosed.

The Department of Defense will also create application storefronts to help the armed services manage the configuration of the mobile devices. These will also serve as a source of secure and approved apps.
